Natural product-based drug delivery for treating fibroinflammatory diseases

  • Fibroinflammatory diseases, characterized by immunity, inflammation, and fibrosis, present a significant clinical challenge. These conditions can result in the replacement of healthy organs with scar tissue, causing damage and impacting patients' quality of life. Utilizing multifunctional active compounds extracted from natural sources with diverse pathophysiological effects shows promise in addressing these diseases. However, the direct application of natural products for treatment may face obstacles, such as potential metabolic and excretory processes, which could impede the desired therapeutic outcomes. On the other hand, certain natural products have the potential to serve as carriers of drug delivery systems for precision therapy, given their stability, biocompatibility, and ability to target fibroinflammatory sites. This review provides insight into the current understanding of the fibroinflammatory disease progression, with a specific focus on the use of natural products and drug delivery systems for treatment. By highlighting the importance of natural products in addressing inflammation, immune dysregulation, and fibrosis through pharmacological interventions and innovative delivery approaches, this review sets the stage for future research in pharmaceutical formulation, aiming to inspire and guide the development of innovative natural product-based drug delivery systems for precision therapy of fibroinflammatory diseases.
