Abstract
AIM: To study the chemical constituents from the roots of Polyalthia obliqua. METHODS: The constituents were isolated and purified by silica gel column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 and preparative TLC. Their structures were identified on the basis of spectral data and physiochemical properties. RESULTS: Ten compounds were isolated and their structures were elucidated as 5,7-dihydroxy-8-formyl-6-methylflavanone (1), demethoxymatteucin ol (2), 5,7-dihydroxy-6-methyl-8-formylflavone (3), 5, 7-dihydroxy- 6-formyl-8-methylflavone (4), marcanine A (5), suberosol (6), -sitosteral (7), vanillin (8), cinnamic acid (9) and nicotinic acid (10). CONCLUSION: Compounds 1-4 were reported from the genus for the first time. All the compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time. Compound 6 showed cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines SPC-A-1 and SGC-7901.
